How much homework have your DC had this half term? DS (Y7) has just finished his and we have added up a total of 22 hours! I think it has hit home how much work you have to do at grammar school. Oh well he seems to have enjoyed it. :D

Homework, don't talk to me about homework,

I have just come into the kitchen and logged on to avoid beating my darling child to a pulp.

He had a huge amount which he spent last weekend doing and I was feeling very smug and in control as I also had all the school uniforms and PE kits done and dusted...well nearly.

As I was about to dish up supper I asked him to check his bag and make sure he had everything ready for tomorrow.

" Oh Mum, I forgot, we have art homework and art is tomorrow ".
As we all know, art is the one homework which take at least six hours not including looking in the garage for the water colours which are required. As I just have not got it in me to let him not do it and suffer the consequences he is now at the dining room table surrounded by bits of paper and I am half way down a large tonic have given up the hard stuff in order to avoid having to buy a christmas frock in a larger size.

Rant over

DS told me at 5.00 pm (after shops had closed) that he needed pipe cleaners to make a diaorama (??) for RE tomorrow. It is now made out of cardboard!! We have art to do as well, a nice portrait, but thankfully not due in until Wednesday. Poor thing, so much homework especially when needed break after first 1/2 term at grammar school!

None for us either - big projects had to be in before half term. Only A level work going on here and not much of that.

I have just sent an email to DC's form tutor stating that I do not want him to be given homework again during the one week half terms. He didn't do it and I've told them that they deal with me and not him if it is a problem. I think that especially at boarding school, their holidays should be their holidays. Actually, I feel this should be the case for any school unless it is in the run up to a major exam.

When my son was at primary school he was given a project on rivers to do one half term. He didn't do it and was in big trouble when he returned to school. I therefore did it for him ( very obviously ) and sent it in with a letter to his head of year complaining that a holiday is a holiday and that my husband doesn't have to work while on leave so why should my small child.

The teacher was entirely unsympathetic and her reply included the phrase " As a mother who is at home all the time you get the chance every evening to help your children with their homework. Half term homework is of great benefit to parents who work full time as it gives them quality time to spend on school work with their children".

My reply is unrepeatable.

No homework here either - or the 2 weeks before the break, but lots before that as discussed on another thread, so I breathed a sigh of relief when I heard the good news.

DS has 2 weeks as well- only one piece of homework thankfully. They have just done re-setting exams for Physics, Chemistry and Biology so had been doing revision for that. I think the school thinks that because they have a lot of homework during termtime they deserve a real break- and I agree!
