Wouldn't recommend the Shambles with small children in tourist season - can get very crowded & stressful to keep hold of them.

Open top bus tour if decent weather & you need a break from the walking

Traffic in Harrogate can be tricky but if you are staying in York you can get the train out there.

I did my PGCE at Uni of York- bliss! I remember a wonderful trip to Castle Howard, but can't remember how long it took to get there. Would love to visit again.

Oh, and I wouldn't recommend Knaresborough and Harrogate for tourists, there's not an awful lot to do here!

There is a wonderful place called the Forbidden Corner. Not right in York though, it's about an hour away by car but our kids absolutely loved it (and so did we :D ) - full of surprises and adventure.

Oh The Forbidden Corner's wonderful, it's up Masham way, in the dales. Certainly is a wonderful place. If you want to go you need to book places beforehand.

Here's the website:

If you are planning on doing Fountains Abbey, York minster, Cliffords tower and/or any of the castles around then you may be better off buying an English heritage yearly membership as it can work out cheaper, each adult card admits up to six children free. If you have time you can use tesco's clubcard points to buy it too.

Mine enjoyed The Dig too. As well as the mock archeological digs there were little sessions where they passed round bits of bone and pot and coprolite (to squeals of mixed delight and horror) for the children to identify and computer "games" suitable for the older ones e.g. identifying from pictures whether a skeleton was male or female, well nourished or not, been killed in battle etc, etc. The only thing is it is quite a small place so there can be a bit of a crush and queuing to get to do and see what you want to.

Railway museum is still a favourite - seem to manage to see something different each time and loads of room to run around in.

Whilst Clifford's Tower is an English Heritage site, York Minster isn't.

Fountains Abbey is a National Trust property.

You would need to check English Heritage and the National Trust websites to see which properties were covered as to whether it was worth your joining fee.
