Re: Rioting....?
Snowdrops, I've seen that footage 3 times now and each time I feel sicker than before. These people have clearly been brought up with no moral compass whatsoever. It's as if no familial or institutional influence has ever had any affect. There is a really dysfunctional heart to urban society and Britain is heavily urbanised. Broken families, drugs. It feels like a cultural change is needed but where do you even begin? And it will cost a fortune at a time when the nation is more than broke. And a whole generation (possibly more than one) has been lost already. What do we do with them?
Doodles: Westminster area, so presumably all those SW1/ W1 areas are affected?

I agree, Chelmsford mum. We do not need to get down to their level. Also, sadly, many of these young people are quite ordinary kids at heart caught up in mass hysteria. They need to be caught and disciplined (difficult when you consider how much more expensive it is to imprison a youth than to send one to University ) but they are not really monsters.Chelmsford mum wrote:Waiting_For_Godot wrote: bullets to the knee-caps in my opinion. They need a sharp message!
I cannot agree with this.Aren't our soldiers fighting and risking their lives against the likes of the Taliban who have a "shoot now - ask questions later" approach to justice. I am proud of our justice system which, although flawed, is fairer than many.
These riots need stronger policing and the full weight of the justice system but let's remember that we have values that separate us from the rioters.
I have seen some terrible groups on facebook calling for rioters to "be strung up " etc etc Let's surely look for justice - not revenge....?
(IMHO - I'm off now)
Difficult to believe when I see images of a woman jumping from a burning building on the street I used to call home - but we must not lose our own humanity in this crisis.
And maybe a little less harping on the 'broken family' angle from some of you guys? I really don't think my children are likely to go torch your house just because their Dad did the tippy-toe.

Re: Rioting....?
I think 'harping' is as helpful as the word 'rioter' in these situations. But I can see how I might have been misinterpreted and, for that, I am sorry, PPM.
I'm not talking about divorced families. I'm talking about kids who have never ever had one or other or both parent(s). I'm talking about the remaining parent with no support services whatsoever and then one can often throw drugs etc into the equation. I've lived and worked in some of those areas that are currently affected, and some people have issues we can't even imagine, such is the dysfunctioanlity.
Not all kids will react like that. But it seems the easiest option when the only family network you have is your gang.

Re: Rioting....?
If there are riots in Victoria tonight then this is getting too close for comfort. I live very close to paddington and a massive council estate. I'm very nervous.
Re: Rioting....?
How long till the looters move from looting shops to looting homes...... do you want the police to be politically correct or you want the menace to cease. I support hard measures. If ever there was a situation that demanded it, it is now.
Having one child makes you a parent; having two you are a referee.
Re: Rioting....?
This is scary and getting out of hand. I am told there are rioters in my town. They are just gathering around a certain known food chain and most shops closed early.
I have checked on BBC and haven't seen anything but in Medway just up the road, they have been there.

I feel VERY angry and its time they stop thinking about rioters rights and act. Use tear gas, army or whatever they have to stop them. I am with you Vasu, hard measures have to start now, people should stop feeling sorry and trying to get excuses for these people. They are criminals, end of.Kent police believe about 15 people travelled by train from London to cause disorder in Kent on Monday night. Cars were damaged and set alight during disturbances involving youths in Chatham, Gillingham and Rainham.
Impossible is Nothing.

WFG...DH coming home from Victoria at the mo, and says there's no sign of problems .
My DH works for the met firearms unit, but has been told not to stay on because of worries about paying lots of overtime. There's talk about using plastic bullets...but I would have thought that would antagonise more. I'm not sure how it's going to pan out.Hopefully extra police presence and the armoured vans will work. I think these rioters are not just grabbing a free tv and having a "laugh "...blocking peoples doors with burning bins so they can't escape when they burn their house is actually evil and they deserve water cannons, the army ...it's going to turn into a war because you will find locals will begin to fight back.

Re: Rioting....?
Sherry...it's been well documented that police from the home counties have mainly all been drafted into London to help...so the police are now expecting people from Kent etc to try and take advantage of there being less of a police presence and loot etc. I'm sure it won't be the same scale and will be dispersed quickly.
Re: Rioting....?
My DH is a MET police Ch Insp in Traffic. He has just been told that all leave is cancelled, and they will be working 12 noon to 12 midnight until further notice. ( and that's probably a conservative estimate)
We had a weekend away planned for just the two of us with no kids ! But I can honestly say although I'm a bit disappointed, this situation is horrendous and I totally agree they have to dealt with it a.s.a.p.
I am not normally a 'hang 'm high' mentality but this is just pure wanton lawlessness and needs to be sorted with an extremely firm hand. is it just me or does anyone else fancy operating a water cannon ?

Re: Rioting....?
Unfortunately I think this may go on for. Some days yet - albeit on a lesser level. But even then there will need to be similar police presence because of ' the threat' that it may spark up again.
Scarlett/ Logic - can't believe they are worried about overtime at a time like this. My DH will be working 19hrs today and tomorrow!! He is Level 1 trained Sgt
