Re: Would it be reasonable to ask a High School...
Hi katel
Just to add DD's experience of a comp. We are in Bromley so have just the 2 superselectives - Newstead Wood for girls and St Olave's for boys. NW was our first choice but unfortunately DD didn't get in. She passed the Bexley 11+ but we actually put our local girls' comp as our 2nd choice, even though we probably would have got 2 of the Bexley grammars from where we are. She was Level 5a for maths and english on leaving primary.
The girls sat CAT tests on their Y6 induction day in July (DD scored 124 - interesting that on another thread re CAT scores the mean CAT score at the local grammar is 117 ) and were in sets for maths, english and science from day 1. All girls learn 2 languages (DD is learning German and Spanish) and have been put in sets since Xmas for languages. At the end of the first term DD was assessed as Level 6 c/b for maths, english and science. The work is challenging (they've been doing GSCE level maths this term) and she has made friends with a number of like-minded girls.
As other posters have said, there will be bright children in all schools - either those who just missed out on GS or those who didn't enter the 11+. Children tend to find others like themselves.
Although I would have loved DD to have gone to NW, I think she is in the right school for her. She is doing well academically, she can walk to school (part of the social life!), she has made lots of new friends and she is HAPPY
Not getting into GS is not the end of the world x

It all depends on the school Katel's son has been allocated. If you can look at the GCSE results subject by subject grade by grade that will be reassuring. Do you see some A*s in the results Katel?
