My DD started the alto sax when she was 10. I did suggest she start with the clarinet because of the size but she was adament it was the sax or nothing. It was quite large & heavy at the beginning, but she coped & is now in Year 12 about to take Grade 8. I do agree that you can make good progress as she seems to do minimal practice :roll:. At her school there is a swing band which has been a source of lots of fun over the years, with various concerts & a couple of tours abroad. Yes it is quite heavy & cumbersome but she has coped with taking it on the school bus or train over the years.

I'd advise getting a really good neck strap though. You can get them that fasten around the shoulders and/or waist and take the weight of the neck.
I'd definitely second this. A 'harness' isn't cheap and looks slightly strange when you don't have the sax attached (!) but it's great for keeping the weight off the neck and preventing headaches.
