Does it matter how well a child is performing agaist others?

I think that it does matter. However, there should be a healthy outlook on this and not pure competitiveness to show off. The world is a small place, and we as a nation are faced with competition to get the business and create jobs. If children learn to strive to be the best and work hard at school, it will be part of their approach to life in general.
