If a teacher is a member of one of those unions, they are entitled to strike whichever sector they work in.

Friend of mine works at an indie ( not a teacher herself), and yes some of them go on strike too.

DD says that in most of her lessons, someone has asked whether the teacher will be going on strike and have had the reply that it is none of their business. Apart from one teacher (no names, no pack drill) who actually gave a fairly detailed reply...

Our primary school will be closed on Tuesday - I've been told that only 1 teacher will be striking. Since our union isn't striking, the rest of us will come into school as normal (no pupils though).

How on earth can they justify closing the whole school for the sake of one teacher on strike???

Perhaps s/he is the school's only First Aider? An area with lots of stay-at-home Mummies, perhaps - or they are counting on the parents not finding out exactly how many members of staff are walking out.

It is because teachers don't have to say in advance whether they will be striking or not.
Therefore the school has to assume other union members will potentially strike with no notice given unless there is a culture at the school whereby teachers let the Head know their intentions beforehand.

The Head isn't supposed to know beforehand whether his/her staff will be on strike. Obviously, our HT wanted to know and have it arranged that only one class wouldn't be coming in to school that day. But in reality, they can't do that- so the whole school has to close.
