The only risk of playing it in family is that you may create everlasting feud between yourselves.
I still blame some of my friends for 30 year old betrayals!
Even at our university games club we were never able to find enough time to play that...but if you're going to mention weird stuff, I'm going to throw in Kingmaker (which is also a surprisingly satisfying game if you're a republican).

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for the suggestions of Carcassone. We played it loads on holiday and absolutely loved it.
We have Ticket for Ride as a Christmas present for ds so are really looking forward to that one too.

And we bought Forbidden Island and have thoroughly enjoyed playing that - so fantastic that you have to work together to win! We've only started at novice stage so far and only manage to escape by the skin of our teeth so a long way to go!
Think we might pick up Ticket to Ride for Christmas, too, Loobylou!

If you like Forbidden Isalnd, try Pandemic. More complex and much darker (ridding the world of deadly disease) but a great one for co-operative play

Thank you for all those contributing to this thread.Just bought Carcassone with my youngest dd for the extended family games we have at Xmas. :D
No one has any useful hints on how to cheat at the game? Its become part of the fun to do it and not get caught out and reveal all at the end.
In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.

Not a board game - but check out Quirkle - simple rules - colours and shapes - but can be played on many levels and gets pretty strategic at times.

We saw it and played it on a skiing holiday - now its a game we take whenever we go away! Check it out

Another vote here for Settlers of Catan. We love it so much that we bought the extension pack Seafarers of Catan, but that was a mistake.

Blokus is a quick but clever game. For strategic maths types try Gobblet - it is a sort of 3D noughts and crosses and the rules can be picked up in a minute or two by all ages but cause heroic battles between older competitors.

How do you mean, cheat? Not sure how you do that. Or do you mean to sneak in on someone else's city or sneak in a farmer that isn't joins on until later but no one realises? That's always fun!
