I know from my youngest dd's school they each year hear the personal testimony of a holocaust survivor. As the years go by those personal memories from the Second World War are silenced by time.Such testimony should never be silenced to stop us repeating the mistakes of the past. However Cambodia, the former Yugoslavia and Rawanda demonstrate Genocide keeps repeating itself and those lessons need to be repeatedly given.

DD went to Auschwitz earlier this year as part of the Lessons from Auschwitz project (which quasimodo's link take you to), and found it a very moving experience.

There is a degree of commitment involved: she attended a pre-trip day in London where they had meetings and discussions and heard the testimony of a camp survivor, and on her return she had to write a diary and give a presentation to the school about it which was filmed and sent off the Holocaust Education Trust. Also, the trip itself is a day trip – to keep costs down so more children can go – so it's a very early start and a late return.

However, she would highly recommend it to any DCs whose school offers them the chance to go.
