Homework

I have read many comments made by parents from this forum that they are against homework or extra home studies. Why do shops then sell educational practice books for practise at home? And what if primary schools do not give enough homework to build up topics? Should we purely rely on teachers to provide gap absent knowledge in all subjects for the children?
