Thanks yoyo. We have had fun this morning searching the net for different games learning the parts of plants! Have to admit I had forgotten which was the stamen and which was the stigma!!

This is the great thing about having children - you get a second chance at education! :)

Patricia, what a simple way to remember these! Any more tips on remembering plant names, please share - we need all the help we can get!

My son's female teacher used to say men have all the 'anthers' (answers) and women have the 'style'. Also filament and stamen have 'men' embedded. At the risk of being disloyal to be my sex, women carp (carpel) on about things!

Thanks to everybody for their tips to help my daughter with science. However since the test early on in January, she claims that she still has not had science. At all. Not once. In fact, she cannot remember the last time she did it at school and seems to think that she is doing History instead of science now!
She is in year 6 - can anybody with a child in this year advise how often they do science. My year 4 son is adamant he does it twice weekly (and he has the same level as my daughter now)!

It may be that instead of one session a week they split their subject teaching into term-long topics, and that this half-term is one of the history projects (World War 2 by any chance, or more broadly Britain since the 1930s) - however as science is a subject which will be tested in the dreaded SATS I'd be surprised if they're not doing any at all. Perhaps they're covering topics your daughter hasn't realised are scientific (which may be a good thing as she'll be learning without a mental block getting in the way:- sounds? Healthy eating? ) or perhaps there is a specialist teacher off sick. Definitely worth a discreet word with the form teacher "what science topics are they covering this term?"

I would have a word with your dd's teacher about the lack of science, particularly as it is a difficult SATS paper. Also secondary school will present a wider spectrum of science with the three topics covered seperately. My son (year eight) struggled with his sciences when he joined year 7(he always thought it was a bit boring in year 6) but now he has managed to get to grips with them as I believe the topics are now more interesting.

Incidently when my son was finding Science difficult in year 6 I bought some practise SATS papers which really helped and he ended up achieving level 5.

Thanks guys, I will ask my child's friends if they are doing anything scientific - don't want to look like a prize interfering wally if I go in and ask and daughter has got it wrong!
I did buy the BBC Science Revise wise book which she is reading - I was just hoping that they would revise a little before the dreaded SATS.

Hi Medwaymum, My DD in Y6 is doing "forces" in science at the mo- although she says it's boring!!! They do science and history every week, on different afternoons.

They did cooking yesterday though, for a change as the school has a new kitchen for the children, she loved that!, they made pizzas from scratch, and the eating was the best bit apparently!!!! Pizza and pancakes yesterday....What a diet!
