Here’s what Oxford says about herd immunity (and the page is very interactive):
http://vk.ovg.ox.ac.uk/herd-immunity" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here’s a clear NHS explanation about vaccines and herd protection and the dangers of giving credence to random, inaccurate stuff from ill-informed sources:
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinati ... important/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The World Health Organisation even has an infographic:
http://www.euro.who.int/en/health-topic ... ility-2018" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Of course, Harvard, Oxford, the NHS and the World Health Organisation may all be wrong. Unlike what’s-her-name.

What’s that? Where’s your hat? The silvery one? It’s on your head....

At one time the village idiot would have wibbled on about all this stuff to people around him and they'd have politely excused themselves and got on with their day knowing that was another 15 minutes they'd never get back. And the village idiot went on being the single voice of idiocy in the village.

Now the village idiot can go online and wibble on about this stuff and have their idiot beliefs validated by every single other village idiot in the world; they can persuade other village idiots who haven't heard their particular take on idiocy that this is an idiot belief they ought to take on board and spread with idiotically manic fervour.

The internet has done some good things and some bad things. I'm increasingly convinced that the bad outweighs the good.

I'm not so sure about that mike. I think large numbers of people have always believed in and been able to spread irrational ideas, a long time before the internet came along... :?

I think it's true that people have always believed mar stuff but mainly it's been the truly invested /conspiracy theorists.
I think what the internet has done is allowed people who are clearly not particularly intelligent - or at least not at all trained in looking critically at evidence - to believe that they are educating themselves on these topics. There are two main groups of people we see who choose not to immunise (a third group don't immunise due to chaotic lives and lack of engagement). One is the genuine conspiracy theorists. The other is a group of (mostly) women who would be considered middle class and who appear to perceive themselves as well educated but who cannot critically assess anything they read (and they often read the DM for some reason). They're the hardest ones to deal with because they think they know as much as the specialists ("we have too many experts" :roll: ).
If their children are rendered infertile by mumps or brain damaged by measles then they will have only themselves to blame but the risk to others makes it hard to forgive them.
