Ouch! Yes, those teeth are razor sharp. It's a good idea to put some chew sticks (coloured wooden thingies from the pet shop) in the cage so the hamster can wear them down a bit. Our hamster bit me once but I don't think he meant to as I was holding some carrot at the time. He looked suitably remorseful afterwards!

You ask daughter to hold a pen with something extremely soft attached to the end of it (or some sort of stick type implement with a soft tip). You allow hamster to get used to being stroked with that first...Ask daughter to talk softly at the same time.
Build up the time and frequency, then introduce hand going into cage without moving. Slowly build up to daughter stroking then eventually picking up the hamster.

Daughter to make sure hands don't smell of food when she wants to stroke hamster.

Oh yes, and gag your husband!!!!

Ed's mum,

Thanks! Will keep in mind. Told DD she seems fairly pleased.
Just one thing, what shall we use for the "soft thing" at the end of the pen?

LQ :D

P.S. Getting a gag cloth ready!

Anything soft I suppose...a small bit of sponge, piece of old towel/flannel?

There are tiny grooming combs available which attach onto the end of a finger - (imagine those soft things: no idea what they are called, which fit over a finger to help with thumbing through papaerwork) - like a soft thimble - which exist to help with grooming of rodents. We have rats and I know that they exist for rats!

There is a brilliant online shop which sells good rodent products. Unsure which order the words go but imagine the words that end in 'ine' which refer to horse dog and cat. British company.
Hope that that website reference is appropriate. If not, profuse apologies and feel free to delete it mods!
