How about some of the war time songs? Lots of these are really well known (well to my grandparents I mean of course )
We'll Meet Again
(There'll be Bluebirds over) The White Cliffs of Dover
There'll always be an England
It's a long way to Tipperary
Pack up your Troubles
The Siegfried Line (we're going to hang out the washing)
When the lights go on again (all over the world)
Kiss me Goodnight Sergeant Major!
There are also lots of other songs based on old tunes or poems - such as:
Auld Lang Syne
Rule Britannia
Jerusalem
And local historical songs based on folk lore and stories - eg
When the Boat Comes in!
The Lambton Worm
The Blaydon Races
(I'm from the North as you can probably tell , but am sure ther must be others from other regions!)
Hope this may help!

Oh - you've set me off thinking now!!!
Do these need to be UK/English? There are some US songs which are well known and popular..
When Johnny comes marching home
The Battle Hymn of the Republic (Glory, Glory Hallelujah)
John Brown's Body
Yankee Doodle
Clementine (Oh my darling)
Blowing in the Wind (protest song of course - currently on a TV advert)
God Bless America
Irish Songs:
The Mountains of Mourne
Danny Boy
Sweet Rosie O'Grady
When Irish Eyes Are Smiling
The Wild Rover
Welsh - All Through The Night (Ar hyd a nos)
Scotland - Speed Bonny Boat (the Skye Boat Song)
Australia - Waltzing Matilda

Just listening to "Bless 'em all" .... we had rather different words to it at school..
There's also white cliffs / always be an england / land of hope and glory...
and a splendid "hang out the washing" which is just a film of a 78 on a Dansette.....
.. youv'e done it now - I'll be remniscing all evening, well between work that is!!!
