I don't see it as a waste of time. Taken over the year as a whole the balance of academic work and other activities probably isn't too far different to the year before, it's just that the scheduling of it means that more of the non academic work is taking place in the last half term, so it's more visible.

DC17C wrote:My DD really enjoyed the time after SATS - there is a lot of PHSE stuff covered which is part of the transition to secondary school. They still have a theme to work on - but there is a drama/performance slant to it building up to the end of term show. They are going on their residential - for some kids the first time they have been away from family for a whole week. There is also a learning to lead project going on and they are learning first aid, raising funds for charities and working with younger children in the school.
I would quite understand if the children are taking part in the activities described by DC17C, alongwith lessons in Maths/English/Science. Even 50% time on other activities would seem fine.

But fun fun and fun after Sats to end of School year - about 2 months is quite a waste. I asked one of our School's teachers and her response was that they have covered curriculum and there was nothing else to do. That way, children would forget most of year 6 learning by the time they start year 7. Not a good position to be in.

I am rather inclined to request School for 'educational' leave before the start of summer holidays. That would be quite educational as well as save us some money by going out before holiday rush begins.

The time after SATS was really important to Ds1 and I think Ds2 would be very unhappy if I pulled him out of school for the last term.
He has worked very hard up until now and the fun time after SATS will be his reward (I have a rule that you get the work done and then socialise). It would be a real shame to miss out on these activities.

Who says that learning isn't fun or fun isn't learning?

A good teacher makes learning part of life

The last weeks of year 6 may seem trivial, but the life skills learned through drama, school trips, talking and planning for the transition to the next phase of their lives is immeasurable. We help move them on. As always , a good teacher makes it look easy!

I also would like to add that during those weeks in school, there will also be swimming and/or athletics, outdoor games, outdoor PE activities etc... These activities raises self esteem, overall academic and physical achievement, improves health, develops social skills and is enjoyable. :)

Tiffinboys, you can't take your DC out before the end of Year 6, that would be cruel. They'd miss out on all the FUN.......and all the 'goodbyes'! :D

I don't see why it would be any different to any other time.
In effect if you withdraws them then you would have to show they are being educated elsewhere eg home educated.

my question was more related to the title of this topic i.e. year 6.
I suppose the local education authority would want to inspect the home edcuation facility etc..to be convinced

Yes, what I was trying to say was that whether it is year 6 or any other time the same 'rules' apply.

If the child is simply kept at home then they would be counted as unauthorised absence and due process would ensue - although how far this would get before the end of the school year is perhaps debatable but it wouldn't be much fun I guess.

So one would need to formally withdraw the child from school in which case alternative provision needs to be made and the only viable option would be home schooling (or moving overseas - tempting :)
Sorry - back to the point -
then the LEA are supposed to inspect the provision but again how long it would take for them to get around to it is another matter. Then they would have to give you the opportunity to get things up to sctratch if there were areas they weren't happy with..................

I am not advocating this by any means and personally I think it would be a shame as it can be a very special time.

Having said that I did make sure that mine carried on with a little Maths at home from Sats until start of year 7 - for them it would have been too long a break.
