Oh, and when they are in year 8 and thirteen, don't pop their sarnies in the first box you can find, particularly if it is an angry birds one. he still checks he has nothing more sinister than a tesco bread bag lurking in his rucksack six months on.

Plain jersey boxers, nothing with gap written on it, no fizzy drinks (obvious really) no frubes or pouch yoghurt (again obvious) dont bother trying to get them to wear warm winter coats let alone force them...son number ones mysteriously got lost!

I think that is it for the bucks area kitty mum. You must know loads more though if you work in school, just ask the kids. I have a feeling Billys will be far less harsh than the boys schools on the more delicate children anyway, less testosterone per form room!

Oh no I hadn't even considered that there were good / bad pants! He has jersey boxers (the fitted type) from ASDA - are we going to have to move upmarket?

The bag thing I'm sorted on - he gas one of those addidas cross body bags which is nearing it's last legs but will last through the first few weeks of school and isn't too uncool until we've sussed the in bag.

From what I can see at work teenagers just want to blend in. Ds likes his hair quite long and there seem to be enough boys there with similar hair.

He did roll his eyes when I asked (jokingly) if he'd still like his Simpsons lunchbox come September

I am hoping the girls dilute things down somewhat!

Unless the frubes are frozen of course and then they're fine :? And if you value your sanity just give up on the coat battle before you even embark on it

Depends how big the locker is but we did a deal that he keep an old coat there in the real winter months in case of seriously bad weather during the day so he could get home without risking hypothermia! He used it about once a year!

We also managed to get him to keep hat and gloves in his bag- better than nothing.

We have had to avoid packed lunches all together - they are just not de rigueur, I'm afraid, at our school according to ds. Ds takes "snacks" so that we don't have to take out a second mortgage for his lunch card but pack ups are strictly for school trips and sports events!

The coat is stoically in the back of the cupboard, waiting to be rejected by ds2 as well. The jumper was worn for three mornings in Y7, when the snow lay thick on the ground and it took the bus about two hours to get in...and he complained bitterly that he then struggled to squash it in his bag!

The lockers in our school are pretty useless - they are too small to fit games bags and book bags so these are strewn all over the school (nobody uses the bag racks!) and there is always the concern, as the homework list doesn't necessarily tie up with the lessons you have, that the book you need is back at school. A hat is a no-no as the hair is "styled" in the morning and, although, I defy anything to move the extra strength gel/hairwax/spray combo, apparently a hat would. Oh well, the shade of blue they go matches nicely with the blazer....

Will my darling little nerd ally become this bothered by what is cool? :( :(

His brother already using gel and foo foo as my dad calls it, but hadn't thought his br would ever raise head out of book for long enough to see what is cool. Am convinced DSsortof1 will have to find all his girlfriends for him!

Okay, so we have got the weirdest kids in the entire western hemisphere - ours actually do wear coats to school, proper warm and waterproof ones as well  I agree that others may and do consider the only acceptable way to arrive at school in bad weather to be as wet and cold as possible, but there was the year that DS1's '3 in 1' coat disappeared at school quite early on in the season and 'miraculously' turned up on the lost property rail just as the weather warmed up again at the end of the spring term...

Ha Ha re blazers! My older son insisted that his brother did not have a new blazer (just a decent second hand) because he said the new boys in brand spanking new uniform stuck out like a sore thumb and he would be teased!
We took his advice (happily  ) and DS was happy with his brothers inside knowledge...
Although we did buy some new bits for his P.E kit we bought cheap spares from the second hand store which were a God send when P.E went missing for a few days.
Dont buy any trainers/boots until you are sure what they need. All schools have very different requirements with sport. Also, many schools try and persuade you to have a specialist mouth guard fitted. We did first year - he wore it about 6 times. Our dentist said the DIY ones were just as good and so we never bothered again and were £24 better off every year.

DIY mouth guards are fine if you can cope with the fitting process and all the complaining about burning their mouths :)
They can also be cut around braces.

As my sons play rugby about 4 times a week, I would swear by the specialist mouth guards!
