I was making the point that you don’t actually need to be fast at mental arithmetic to be good at maths. I think that is also relevant to the thread.

I agree. But that was not understood in the first few years of primary school.

My opinion on Mr Kumon: He died in 1995 and that could have been a very good thing for UK schoolchildren but, disappointingly, his materials live on. I do remember my nephew joyously chanting that Mr Kumon was dead - he was all the more pleased because his mother had decided to discontinue with it.

Teachers here can inask which textbook is good for maths at KS3 level-- I do not particularly like Collins or cgp

What does the school use? You should not need additional textbooks at Secondary ...

They get papers for practice -- no textbook is being used

Is there no copyright symbol on the worksheets? It's best to ask the staff because every teacher has a favourite style of book.

Sorry but just have to point out that we don’t always just get to do the thing we like in life.. isn’t doing/not doing something because of how you perceive them, especially in terms of learning, rather silly?

This is an old threat but I was surprised to see so many criticisms of Kumon. My niece passed 11+ with kumon and no tutoring. When asked what helped her pass the 11+, she always credits Kumon.

She went to Dr Challoner's High School in Bucks.

We will be doing Kumon for the speed and problem solving would be worked through at home.

We did Kumon very briefly.
It was absolutely grim.
I know loads of children who started it but none kept it going for more than a few months.
It teaches in my opinion rote learning but no understanding.
I wouldn’t recommend it at all.

Kumon does not cover very detailed word problems in Maths and the movement towards this has been very pronounced in the last few years.

I find it amazing that parents pay but they have to mark all the work. DG
