Advice on long term prep for NVR paper

Post by Villagedad »

Hi

We are based in West Kent and have a DS who wont be taking the 11plus for a few years yet but we wanted to pick your brain for advice on what activities are good for the long term preparation for the NVR paper...

He currently does kumon maths, reads most nights, and we play word games (scrabble, top trumps etc).

Any guidance greatly appreciated

Regards

Hi Villagedad,

Have a look at the entry level Bond age graded books, they start of very simply

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/books/list.php?ex=299

Rated age 6-7 but if sat side by side talking it through, rather than using as a test, then younger ones can cope. It worked for my DS2 in year 2 and DD in reception insisted she had her "turn"

More generally anything that involves counting picture elements, rotating, mirror imaging, spotting the odd one out, jigsaws, etc, will help. :)

Remember NVR does not involve acquired language skills, other than explaining the answer, so you might be surprised at how flexible and fast young brains can be, well I was outclassed.
