non vr scores getting worse! Help!!!
Hi
Once again turning to this forum for some much needed advice.
Started on this journey back in march, for a non verbal test in october followed by Maths and English in november. Knew I had started a bit late , but still with a deep breath and encouragement from some on this forum have been giving it my/our best shot since...2 b honest Im not having major successes in any area, but there has been improvements made, that is except for Non verbal and I just cant figure out why. Perhaps Ive been TEaching it all wrong, not that Im much good at it myself!
When I first gave my DC a non verbal practice paper just to test the waters back in March he scored 75%.
I actually thought that was pretty good for a first run and thought that in a few months that score would naturally improve. I went through the How 2 do bond book and my DS seem to find that plain sailing, bond 9-10 went very well and the bond 10-11plus started out excellently 2, 90% ish I think.
However somewhere towards the end of the 10-11+ bond books and moving onto the bond more 10-11+ scores did begin to slip-80-85, maybe one or 2 had lower scores. The real problems came wen I startd the IPS practice papers, scores seemed to consistently be about 55-65%!! I then read some postings on this forum that those papers were found by some to be a bit odd, ..Ah I thought I shouldnt worry. So moved onto Athey, which I had gleaned from this forum was comparatively fairly easy, but still not having great luck. 80% first paper, today just 55%.!
Im not sure why things are getting worse rather than better. So far we have been doing Non verbal work about once a weekish, however as the first test is non verbal at the end of October I think we will be spending the majority of our time on non verbal. Does anyone think that 7 weeks will be enough time to boost this score? Do I need to go back to method books, any recommendations which ones. I feel a bit strange going back to method books, I keep thinking that now especially with such little time the best thing to do would be to keep doing practice papers, but I could be wrong? I am also feeling that perhaps I have been wrong to self tutor as I seem to have made things worse rather than better. Oh I guess ill have to hold my nerve until the tests, cant give up now Can I?
