advice -all tutors-statement on dyslexia
hi,
not quite sure what to do for best.child has a statement of dyslexia, taking 11 plus in oct, unsure if to let bucks c.c know this now, will they make any extra provision? Or should we wait and see ,if unsucessful in exams to show statement then ,for appeal purposes?
child bright and intelligent makes silly mistakes at times,recognises same afterwards.Getting around 76% on CD ,and on IPS test papers .30 mins /50 questions.Finishes on time.
Current school not very helpful ,unlikely to support any appeal if reguired,independent , would rather children stay on ( secondary on site)
of course more money for them!!

The document suggests your child needs to be severely dyslexic, in addition, it would appear that Bucks cc need to be informed while your child is in year 5.
I suggest you talk to your school, they should be aware of the disability act. It is a nation wide legal framework or alternatively speak to county.

Not quite sure what is meant by a "statement of dyslexia" - is this a report from a qualified professional such as an educational psychologist?
It rather depends what it says. County (and indeed any appeals panel) will know that, under disability legislation, the impairment has to be substantial before discrimination becomes an issue and "reasonable adjustments" are required.

yes it is a statement from a educational psychologist.He appeared to be struggling in year 4 so the school advised he got assessed to find out if there was any problems.The assessor said he appears to have mild dyslexia and would recommend slightly longer times to finish exams.Despite this they haven't given him any extra times during exams,even though they have stated in his report that he has the knowledge ,understands the concept and is capable but appears to' panic in test situations'
The school have been very unsupportive hence wanting to withdraw him next year.They are unaware of our plans ie 11plus,they will rather we stay and keep paying! In our experience, Independent is not allways good and one needs to research very very carefully.Sometimes it appears it is all about the money and no real concern for the child ,they also in that particular schol have poor pastoral care.I am desperate to withdraw him,but feel there is no point in starting another school for year 6 only, and then move again to secondary.

It's worth talking to BCC Admissions to seek their advice about what to do when the school has not been at all supportive. Say that you have a report from an ed. psych. stating that extra time should be given, but the school has ignored it. (They may lose interest when they find that the dyslexia is mild, but it's worth a try.)
Although mild dyslexia might not strictly be considered a disability (under the relevant legislation), it could still be mentioned at any appeal as an extenuating circumstance. An appeal panel is most likely to give it some weight if the score is very borderline (say 119-120), and there is sufficient alternative evidence of high academic ability.
