What do you do one or two days before the test?

Post by pumpkinface »

For those of you who've been through the process: what do you do before the test (like one or two days before)? Do you try and stay relaxed and not do any more revising or try and squeeze some last-minute tuition in? Don't want to stress DS out just before taking the test but fear he'll be a bit too relaxed and lose focus if we do nothing!

It is a very personal decision based on your DC. Some students like to do something completely different, watch a film, have a lovely meal and then have an early night. Others would prefer to spend the time revising key areas such as SPAG. Discuss with your dd or ds what they would prefer to be doing.

Relax. We watched a movie the night before the important tests, and went to the beach the morning of the 11+. Although part of me was screaming to squeeze something in at the last minute, this was absolutely the best approach. And she aced everything.

Normal life.

School - childminder - home x2
School - home x1 (didn't need childminder on Fridays for DS2).

Make sure up in good time in the morning (crack of dawn - well, 6.30am - for DS2, who had chosen as his exam day treat breakfast at our favourite greasy spoon on the way to the school where he was sitting the exam ).

Test here is on a Saturday, normal week for us...one 10 minute test on the Thursday and then an evening of relaxation, including early night on the Friday. Some kids took the Friday off school for last minute practice or relaxation. We didn't as we thought that would stress DD and make the test seem more of a big deal than it actually is. Saturday morning was a normal 'get ready to go out ' morning, but then DD only had a 5 minute walk to the school for the test. DP walked her there as I would have got her stressed. Apparently they talked about Minecraft...I'd have been panicking about spellings

Thanks everyone - good ideas. My plan was to just go over strategies a couple of days before and check he's good with it, then relax the day before. Will need to work on getting up early as DS is not great in the mornings.

Keeping the same routine for Dd as much as possible worked. One day she had to be out by mid morning. One was a Saturday, the other was mid afternoon- DH picked DD up from school to take her to the test so she did school on the morning and test after. She did fine But appreciate some may need more distance in timings from school to test. It is a very individual choice.

We stopped with a week to go, and then just focused on removing as many stressors/irritations as possible, e.g. no music practise, no homework. Lots of love-bombing and positive thinking stuff! Best of luck x

Take it easy, relax, revise past mistakes.
