CHILDREN's IQ TEST????

Post by panicattack! »

I was wondering if anyone had a good site/IQ test that they have run on their child/ren and if they would recommend it or pass it on. Most of the tests online have to be paid for and I am not sure how good they are! Thanks.

The short answer, is that I can't suggest a site (we used an ed psych for DS1 and haven't needed to test DS2), but I'm sure there are lots of sites and that some are OK and others worse than useless.

However, it depends what you want it for (to confirm or deny your own assessment, as evidence to present to school or an appeal panel) and also the approximate ability level of the child in question (IQ test are less accurate at the extremes; a very bright child should do a test designed for such children, such as Stanford-Binet (I think)).

Thanks Zee. I was hoping to get this in place in case of an appeal later on. DS quite bright but we live way out of catchment area so I had been told that it is something that you could put in should you need to appeal.

I think you need to be clear about the grounds on which you might be appealing.

If your child didn't qualify in the test, I can see the point of as much evidence of academic ability as possible. However, the additional evidence would usually need to come from a recognised independent professional (such as a chartered educational psychologist) to carry any weight.

If your child qualified but the school is full, an appeal panel is unlikely to be interested in overall ability (unless score was one of the admission criteria). In this situation an appeal panel is likely to focus on your reasons for wanting a place. See:

Hope this helps.
