I have a child at Holland Park School in Year 7 and generally I have been very happy with it. What is it that you want to know?

Just generally how the schools achievements are from parents point of view and perhaps kids behaviour. :)

In my opinion if a child is intelligent and works hard they can do very very well there. My child is in the top set in year 7 and is working at KS Level 7 in English and Science and 8 in maths. They really push the kids in the top sets. The homework burden is quite heavy compared to many schools and the higher the set, the more homework. The children in the top sets tend to be better behaved, though there are some "chavvy" kids who don't want to learn (my child's description not mine!!).

Not sure about all the Head's claims, remember it is banded admission and about half the kids don't do GCSE's but are pushed into BTEC's etc so I think the figures of 98% with 5 GCSE passes is rather misleading.

My child did not want to go to the school originally because of the behavior of the kids in Notting Hill Gate and on local buses; however they have now got used to it and don't think it is that bad compared to some other schools. The school comes down hard on bad behavior generally, I think that is part of the reason the kids go a bit crazy at home time.

I have lived in the area all my life and believe me, it has really really improved. They expect to get an Ofsted "Outstanding" from their inspection which took place just before half term.

I was terrified when my child got a place there (it was our last choice). There are things that annoy me about the school but generally I am pleased with it. My child has made some really good friends there and it is good to go to a school in our local community. My elder child goes to a selective school some way away and to be honest I wish I had known how good the school was when they were 11; I was very prejudiced against it but have been pleasantly surprised.

re the 98% GCSEs - I think that BTECs can be converted to GCSE equivalents which can boost the figures here - the local secondary modern went from 40% with 5 A*-C to 75% when they started including diplomas:


BTEC Level 2 (old syllabus)

The BTEC First is a level 2 qualification that can be delivered at KS4 and KS5.
Diploma

The BTEC First Diploma is a 360 guided learning hour qualification comprising core and specialist units which cover aspects of knowledge, understanding and competency necessary for employment within the sector. As such the BTEC First Diploma offers a qualification which can extend a learner’s programme of study and provide vocational emphasis within their programme of study.
Students study 6 units which are usually taught over 2 years.
It is the equivalent of 4 GCSEs at A* - C. Students receive 4 grades of either
Distinction* (A* GCSE equivalent)
Distinction (A GCSE equivalent)
Merit or (B GCSE equivalent)
Pass (C GCSE equivalent)
