This could save a lot of money:
"Our analysis suggests that the ability to write one’s own name is a robust predictor of future academic performance and is a suitable measure for use in assessments" (unlike our 11+ tests!):

Or possibly

'Having pre-school teaching of some description (either in a nursery setting or by parents at home), which includes learning to write your name (but probably includes lots of other things as well), indicates how good your skills in reading, maths and phonological awareness are at the end of your first year of schooling'.

I couldn't recognise my name when I started school and couldn't write it in full correctly for another year. :(

I also read an article a few years ago that said that the age that a child starts to talk is an effective predictor. This could be logged/I think is already logged by health visitors. http://brain.oxfordjournals.org/content/133/8/2185

The reality is that it is motivation that carries a child through. It doesn't matter how bright, if their is no motivation and they don't want to work they won't.
