out of catchment boys grammar school

I am based in Harrow, London and would like to know which grammar schools can I apply for boys wherein out of catchment area is permitted, apart from QE boys. Secondly, when does the application process starts for the same.

Mill Hill County High School has some places (20 a year) with no catchment based on exam results. That and QEB are the only 2 I know of in N London.

MHCHS has their first exam in June? July? which is quite a useful way of assessing how your child is doing. The second round is in September

You had better check the websites but from memory you have to apply to sit the exams around Easter of year 5. Application is not till October of year 6 but by then the exams are all over. You can't apply late for the exams so make sure you look on the websites for the exact details...

You can apply for Chesham Grammer School in Buckinghamshire. It's a mixed grammar school.

You can apply but it doesn't mean you will get in if you pass. It will depend on how popular it is that year. Check the past admission distances on the Bucks section. The school has become more popular in recent years ,& there is no guarantee that this will not continue, with the admission area shrinking.

St Olaves in Bromley, SE London you can sit wherever you live in the UK. For Kent you can sit wherever you live but if you don't get a high enough score for the out of county places you still have time to move 'in-county' as long as that is by second week in December. There have been a good number of other threads on this same topic.

Thanks for your advice. Just wanted to confirm is St. Olaves Grammar School refers to the Orpington one as I have applied for the same. Is there any other by the same name.Are Bromley and Kent different ones.Thanks.

Yes St Olaves is the one in Orpington in the London Borough of Bromley. Bromley and Kent are different regions. In Kent you have the boys schools of Skinners and The Judd for example as well as Dartford Grammar - all of which have some out of county places, one of Judd and Skinners changed recently to reduce the number of out of county places, but having a DD I don't pay so much attention to the boys schools. You only need to apply to Kent once an then put the different schools down on your SIF, it isn't a separate test for each of the Kent schools.

Theoretically, yes, there is nothing to stop OP from applying but it is over 20 miles from Harrow to Sutton and according to Google maps roughly a 1.5 hours journey each way, and that's outside of rush hour... Plus a certain proportion of places in SGS and Wilson's are offered to boys in local 'preference' postcode areas. Not sure whether Wallington do the same at present. Best to check the latest admissions policy documents on the respective websites.

Registration for both boys' and girls' Sutton grammars' SET in September is now open, so parents of children currently in year 5 can start applying now. Note the deadline for the SET registration is earlier this year, on 19 August. The first round test (SET) date is 14 September (according to SGS website).

Admission to Skinners' is score based and Judd has in and out of area/postcode places. Like other schools there is nothing to stop OP's DS sitting the Kent test and applying for these schools, however, the journey will be horrific as it is some 55 to 60 miles and public transport would be across London and out the other side. Not a viable journey.
