Schools from Brent

Hello everyone

We are at the moment preparing our daughter who is in Year 4. We are thinking to move house if required as we don't want her to travel too much.. From your experience which school is easier to get in in terms of catchment area if we still live in Brent.
We are yet to decide the school and are open to suggestions. Broadly, we are thinking of
1. Dr Challoner's High School, Amersham
2 Langley Grammar
3 Upton Court Grammar
4 Watford Girls

But if its better to move house, which area will be better in terms of options of better schools not only grammar schools.

Thank you
KK

This thread has info on histroic allocations for Bucks, so worth looking at to see if you have any chance of DCHS from where you are.

If you look at the ‘stickies’ at the top of this forum, you will get info on the historic allocatons data for the Slough schools, plus links for admissions pages. Langley has just changed theirs slightly, I don't think you have any chance of getting in ooc.

I don’t remember seeing similar info collated together for Watford, but here night be a good place to start, plus see their own website for admissions policy.

Hello Krithi :-)

Watford Girls is not a Grammar School. You would need to be in catchement to apply. Details can be found here:

http://www.watfordgrammarschoolforgirls ... ons&pid=77" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.watfordgrammarschoolforgirls ... 4C73A4.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Watford area: The school will reserve 44 specialist places (60% of the total specialist places) for girls whose normal home address
lies within the Watford area. Of these places, 13 are reserved for musical aptitude and 31 are reserved for academic ability. In the
event of more than 44 such applications, places will be offered strictly in descending order of candidates’ test scores.

Rest of the admission area: The school will reserve 29 specialist places (40% of the total specialist places) for girls whose normal
home address lies within the ‘rest of the admission area.’ Of these places, 8 are reserved for musical aptitude and 21 are reserved
for academic ability
. In the event of more than 29 such applications, places will be offered strictly in descending order of
candidates’ test scores.

Thanks LLL, Watford isn’t that close so I’m not familiar with the schools or their admissions (though I did know it is partially selective).

Krithi - Your daughter is year 4 - it is kind of too early to start preparation so I would hold for next year to start real preparation.

Regarding moving - are you planning to move now or you are just looking for info moving after exam - information can be change depends on that

You have to remember that your exam is on Sep 2019 - it is too early to say what kind of rule will be available that time if you are looking for info regarding moving after exam.

lets take your options with current rules

1. Dr Challoner's High School, Amersham - it is highly unlikely that you will get admission from Brent
2 Langley Grammar - Langley rule is changing every year - year 2017 start , they were ok to give admission from Wembley but for 2018 entry - they have changed rule , so you never know what will happen after 2 years
3 Upton Court Grammar - 2017 it was possible
4 Watford Girls - No chance from Brent

there are few schools you can target on top of your list

1) Henrietta Barnet - it is tough to get admission
2) SCD from SW Herts
3) Latymer - but you must move before Jan 2020 even before you got confirmed admission in March 2020 - this may change next year
4) Sutton school - https://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/schoo ... ey-11-plus" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - they do allow admission every without move
5) Kent - https://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/schoo ... nt-11-plus" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - this school you can target without moving
6) Bromley - https://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/schoo ... ey-11-plus" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - this school you can target without moving
7) http://www.cchs.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - this school you can target without moving
8) http://www.csse.org.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - these schools you can target without moving
9) Some other schools from Slough consortium - http://www.herschel.slough.sch.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As you can see, your option will be widen if you are open to move but on same time, your targeting whole London surrounding and there is no way you can manage travel from Brent - you need to think and plan very careful - not all area are suitable for your family needs, your work, friends group etc.

If you are really thinking to move NOW - then I would suggest you to check Bucks schools since you have plenty of choices but please move on perm basis , I know few family has done it -

if you are not really thinking to move then please remember you have great school in your area - it is actually better then so many grammer school ...

http://www.whtc.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

On this forum, most of veterans do not like people to move because of just one school & somewhat I agree with that message!!
on same time , I feel that it is family choice and I respect every one to make own decision- so hopefully this info helps !

Hi Krithi

I don't know where you are in Brent, but if you live within 5 miles, you have a chance of a place at Michaela Community School, which has a very grammar school type of ethos and a challenging curriculum. Michaela has been controversial because of its perceived strict policies, but I am impressed by the head's desire to challenge children at very high levels and by the standard of work that I've seen on various blogs. They seem to be very open to visitors.
It might be a good option to consider for you. http://mcsbrent.co.uk/apply/

Krithi - if you move to Bucks [or anywhere else].you don't know whether your child is likely to qualify for a GS. You need to check what other schools are on offer - in Bucks the alternative is a Secondary Modern which vary in quality.

I agree Y4 is too early, they will burn out and get bored. Concentrate on reading a wide variety of books, developing good vocabulary and maths skills, all of which can be done with school work and as a regular family without the intrusion of Bond books etc.

Just a correction to the list: for Bromley / Orpington for the girls’ school (Newstead Wood) you have to provide evidence of address at the point of registering for the test, there is a radius for the girls’ school of 9 miles. I don’t know if they can stop people outside of the 9 miles sitting the test but the results letter puts you in one of three categories and if it is category three, outside of the 9 miles then no matter how good the score no one has got a place in this category. Options to move into category 1 are not given, it is implied it is set as of the date of registration. I have seen that other schools have come unstuck in their admissions materials on similar points and it may change but I haven’t seen any consultation yet on any changes. The boys school has no such catchment.

Some in our area hope for the Kent, Bexley or Bromley/Orpington Grammars as all are in reach, but have excellent comprehensive options like Darrick Wood if the grammar route doesn’t work out.

If you can move now Watford would be an excellent place to move to as you would then have access to all the schools in the SW Herts Consortium.

Of course you would have lots of options in Bucks as well.

As has already been stated you will not be able to apply to Watford girls unless you are in catchment so if you are not going to move you need to take this school off your list of options. DG

Same for Bucks, you can apply from Brent but would be very unlikely to get a place anywhere.
