you have a better chance of an OOC place down here at Southend or Westcliff High School for Girls.

Yep - would prefer to avoid needing to find a school to complete year 6 - especially not with the hassle of an in-year application and the associated uncertainty

Thanks - will certainly visit Essex and incorporate into our plans.
Am I right in my understanding that both Southend and Westcliff allocate 25% of their seats to OOC applicants ?

For 2018 entry, it is a minimum of 25%, so 45 at SHSG and 46 at WHSG. Historically, there have been more places available OOC because not enough IC girls take and pass the CSSE exam, but the grammar schools and Southend Borough Council are trying to encourage more local parents to consider the Westcliff and Southend grammars. The two girls' schools are quite different and you need to visit; locals tend to go more on which one their DD likes better, OOCs seem more likely to be swayed by the fact that WHSG is often slightly higher up the league tables (this is, of course, a generalisation). SHSG is a flatter and shorter walk from its nearest railway station, which is a plus  .

Btw I am only being helpful re the OOC places as encouragement along the lines of school to consider which wouldn't necessarily involve having to move before the end of year 6, not encouraging commuting from halfway across London...

OP - there are some good schools in London; why are you looking elsewhere?

As indicated in my initial post - we are unable to apply to any school other than Henrietta Barnett.
The secondary school in our vicinity accepted ZERO new students in year 7 last yer (100% intake from year 6 a it is an all-through academy)

Sorry, that cannot be the only school you can apply to - the LA has a duty to provide education.

Which bit of London are you in?
In all the bits of London I know there are far more schools available to apply to than it seems are available in other parts of the country.
My friend had 9 schools last year she could have reasonable expectations of being offered - 7 of which she was virtually guaranteed if she put them first. That might be one end of a spectrum but it's certainly not very unusual for London (North London anyway)

Yep - there are a few other schools that we can apply to, which fall into one of two groups
1) we are not close enough and hence wont get admission
2) Schools that we don't want to send our DD to (Oftsted 'needs improvement' ratings and other issues)

We are also looking to move out of central London for other reasons (quality of life, etc.)

Um... why not find just find an outstanding secondary school in a nice area and move to well within their cachement? How about (purely for example) Bohunt School in Hampshire, which has just as high academic aims as a grammar, stretches the most able pupils (eg they have accelerated immersion language streams in some years where the children are taught in a second language for non-academic subjects in order to increase their fluency).

Because it’s not a grammar school, I expect.

If you are looking to move out of central London for quality of life etc, do you still have to access it for work? Far better to look at counties commutable around London with Outstanding Secondary Schools. Your DD has the pressure completely taken off her, she will achieve well (GS really are not the be all and end all) and any pressure will be on you with a commute. You have to remember that there is no guarantee your DD will get a place - and, as you are looking to move out anyway, move somewhere nice that has an outstanding school (and "might" give you access to a GS if she gets in) - choose the quality of life thing rather than hanging around in rented accommodation till the last minute to move for a GS - unless you are not serious about moving out of central London, of course.
