I think there's also the local folklore that plays a huge part. I feel like I know better, yet a local parent told me "if you don't put _____ 1st choice, you won't get it". She has an older child in the coveted school and honestly believes that only 1st choices are offered there... that the school admissions somehow have that info when other schools don't. It's convincing when you hear the same lore over and over from people who've been through the system.
