Haberdashers' Aske's Crayford Academy
Just received a leaflet about the new Academy on Iron Mill Lane, in Crayford which is taking children from 2010. I'm tempted to go to one of the information evenings in September and wondered if anyone had any views on what the school might be like?
The Haberdashers Academy in New Cross seems to get very good results (96% 5 A*-C) but the one in Bromley not so good (52%) (presumably reflecting the difference between a selective and non-selective area).

The school in Bromley is on the edge of that borough and Lewisham. It was a failing school called Malory and has only been going a couple of years. The school is really being turned around but obviously doesn't look as good as the one in New Cross yet. But then 52% is a figure that BH and Welling can only dream about at the moment.
If you read the Ofsted report on the New Cross school it mentions the challenging behaviour coming through in the lower years. If this isn't sorted out soon then it will reflect on the gcse results in future years.

Has anyone been to either of the two information evenings? If so what are your opinions.....
My concerns if my DS goes to this school would be no older pupils in the school. I think there is something healthy about looking up to your peers and older colleagues.... I know my son who has just gone into year 6 felt it was something special.

There was a meeting last night, I didn't go, the next one is on Wed 30th Sep. I plan to go with my dd.
My concern over this academy:
1. No older pupils as already stated.
2. Very long day poss up to 5pm.
3. Catchment. It's the same as Erith and there's big probs there although they are neatly swept under the carpet. There's already challenging behaviour in the primary school section of the academy. This can be addressed if the academy has the parental backing and the determination to deal with it.

I was very, very impressed. The staff are very smart and extremely professional. The curriculum is fantastic and the technology specialism is everything required for the 21st century. This is not just a welcome school for the area, I reckon it could become the best in the borough leapfrogging the grammars.
It was packed, some people couldn't get in so another session was held after ours. Those people waited outside for an hour. There clearly is the demand for this school and there were a lot of families from Kent - no pitchforks here!
This school is going to be very heavily ovrsubscribed without a shadow of a doubt. Unless you live within 1 to 1.5 miles of this school I can't see you getting in. This wasn't said but you needn't be Einstein to work it out! The school has been set up to accommodate Slade Green and Crayford areas in the main. There is a 2 node system so distances will be measured from the applicant's house to the academy or to Slade Green school. The closer measurement will be the one used.
I have never seen such demand for a decent school with high standards. The principal clearly laid out the conditions of accepting a place there including behaviour and dress and if you don't wish to comply, then don't apply. The difference here was that he meant it and he wasn't paying lip service to it unlike Erith.
Hopefully this school will drag some other Bexley schools up to a decent standard.
