Bexley Grammar School

Post by Anand76 »

Hi - My daughter has scored 235 marks in Bexley exam and we live in Hounslow. Do we have a chance to get the place in Townley or any other Bexley Grammar School?

Does anyone have last year scores who were offered places in the Grammar School?

Thanks

Hi Anand76,

Most of the school places available in Bexley Grammar schools are based on distance and not score. The only places allocated on score are the 180 children who scored highest in the test, they have the choice of any of the schools. The distances offered for the September 2017 intake (as at June 2017) were:

Bexley Grammar 2.3 miles straight line
Chislehurst and Sidcup 5.1 miles straight line
Townley Grammar 9.7 miles walking route. Although Townley have previously offered to all applicants.

These distances may have altered after June. Hope this helps.

Bexley Grammar School:
Over-Subscription Criteria
Where applications for admission exceed the number of places available, the following criteria
will be applied, in the order set out below, to decide which students to admit:
1. Looked After Children and Previously Looked After Children (children who were
looked after, but ceased to be so because they were adopted (or became subject to a child
arrangements order, special guardianship order or residence order).
Top priority is given to children who are, or have been, in public care.
2. Guaranteed Grammar School Place.
Those students identified by Bexley Council as achieving one of the highest 180 scores in the
selection tests.
3. Sibling
Those students with a brother, sister or step/half brother or sister living at the same address
who are currently attending Bexley Grammar School in Years 7 – 11 at the time of application.
4. Staff Children
Bexley Grammar give priority to children of staff where the member of staff has been
employed at the school for two or more years at the time at which the application was made.
5. Distance
Students will be admitted on the basis of proximity to the school measured in a straight line
from the home address. The distance will be measured by the Local Authority’s computerised
measuring system from the gate of the home address to the middle gate entrance approved
by the Governors as the official entrance to the school.
6. Test Score
Where distance is identical to an accuracy of 0.001 of a mile then the scores in the selection
tests will be used as a tie-breaker with priority given to the higher score.
Home address is the address at which the child lives with a parent or registered guardian who
is the main carer, defined as ‘the Home address where the child spends the majority of the
school week (Mon-Fri)’
Proof of residency will be required. The offer of a place may be withdrawn if proof of residency
is not met.

Chis and Sid:
Over-subscription
Where applications for admission exceed the number of places available, the following criteria will
be applied, in the order set out below, to decide which students to admit:
1. Students who are or have been looked after children.
2. Those students identified by the Local Authority as achieving one of the highest 180 scores
in the selection tests.
3. Students with a sibling attending Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School at the date of
close of applications. In the case of In Year Admissions, this will be either at the date of
application or would take effect when a sibling has joined the school subsequent to the date
of application. A sibling includes full, half, adopted and step brother or sister living at the
same address.
4. Those students with a parent or registered guardian employed at Chislehurst and Sidcup
Grammar School on a permanent basis for two or more years at the date of close of
applications.
5. Priority is given to pupils living nearest the school based on distance from home to school.
This is measured in a straight line from the applicant’s home address to Chislehurst and
Sidcup Grammar School’s entrance on Hurst Road. Home address will be taken as the child’s
home address at the time of allocation. This is the address at which the child lives with the
parent or registered guardian who is the main carer, that is, the parent eligible to receive
Child Benefit and/or Child Tax Credit.
6. Where the distance is identical to 0.001 of a mile, the scores in the selection tests will be
used as a tie-breaker with priority given to the higher score. Random allocation tie-break
will be used to decide who has highest priority for admission if the distance between two
children’s homes and the scores are the same. This process will be independently verified.

From what Mich985 has said, it's most likely that the policy for Townley will be pretty similar. It does seem a bit odd that you wouldn't have checked the actual admissions policies, though, when you went to the Bexley website to register your DD for the exam?

Please say you are not thinking of making her travel all the way from Hounslow to Bexley every day, should she actually get a place?

Unfortunately your child is very unlikely to get a place on that score from Hounslow. It is not within the top 180 score range. If you can move to the area by December (I think) then you may be in with a chance but look at the historic distances. Did you apply for grammar schools nearer to where you live?

If you really want the school no harm putting it on your CAF. There could be a bulge class or other schools could be more popular meaning Townley can offer further distances or all offered again, nobody knows at this stage. In a number of years fairly recently Townley has gone to all offered and could do so again. However do seriously look at the commute. If not a quick and easy one, or you are not planning on moving, do think twice before applying.

I’m not from Kent but do pass through Hounslow on a regular basis.
From reading your posts and the various responses on several threads, I’m coming to the conclusion that it not a given you will get a school in Kent, Medway or Bexley, although it might help people give you better advice if you responded to their questions. Some of them are Kent locals and are in a much better position to give local advice.

Unless you need to move to Kent anyway for reasons other than a school, can I therefore strongy advise that you also include a local school on your CAF near Hounslow that you are happy with and have a good chance of getting, otherwise you could end up with a school you really don’t want miles away.
I’d suggest starting here if you haven’t already looked. I don’t know any of the schools, but I would hope you will have least looked at some of them as back up already.
