True. I've got no idea how all this is likely to work for exams in the next "round". (I'm not planning to be working in the role next summer, but presume it will be needed for the promised Autumn resits) But it would in any case need to be in a (large enough) separate room, and the scribe would wear a mask/visor or be sideways on with a perspex screen and (in the case of filling in exam papers) would presumably need a separate copy of the paper to write in.

I can't recall if there is yet any use of voice recognition software which would seem the obvious route eventually (although arguably it would put those using it at a distinct advantage compared to the rest of the year group toiling away in biro!). But maybe some use of headphones for dictation to a scribe in a separate room?

Yes, using a scribe while socially distanced does strike me as more challenging than the normal! I had figured this would make extra time the more sensible option for DD’s belated year 10 assessments, starting Friday, but it seems the school have other plans.
Unfortunately, despite the school’s own SpeLD assessor recommending a scribe for DD’s non-essay exams, today we discovered the school are making no arrangements beyond a word processor.
Apparently the SEN students are supposed to track any accommodations to make sure there’s a suitable record for GCSEs so, as far as the school is concerned, this is it.
We already tried to set up an online meeting with the SENCo last week so if DD’s queries don’t bear fruit tomorrow we’ll have to escalate in some other way.

So, enquiries have established that the school had also noticed the difficulty with using a scribe during a pandemic and thought they would see how DD coped in her non-essay exams without a scribe (or extra time). I really am torn between  and

It has taken 4 years of OT reports, paediatrician reports, EdPsych reports and a SpeLD assessment to get to this point. However, I have determined that the most recent EdPsych report which confirms and elaborates on the findings of the school SpeLD assessment, was overlooked, so may yet carry the day. On Monday I will be going through with the school SENCo the list of all the reports they should have to see what else has gone missing.

This state of affairs would be less galling if we hadn’t just discovered that the school has recently screened a significant number of DD’s cohort and given them exam accommodations this week. One of DD’s friends, who now has the same exam accommodations as she has been allowed, supposedly doesn’t yet know why she has been given them, since it has all happened so quickly.

I’m going to trust that we get this all sorted out by Monday but, since DD has her exams next week, what recourse does one have if a school does not allow appropriate accommodations?

Oh dear PS how totally frustrating. I'm afraid I do not know the answer to your queries but just wanted to wave and say keep going and well done so far. Good luck with everything.

For anyone else going through something like this, (difficulty getting appropriate access arrangements for exams) the IPSEA website has been the most useful so far:

https://www.ipsea.org.uk/help-in-exams" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; offers a path for escalation if special educational needs are ignored, and specialist advice if required.

An update as DD is taking her last round of exams for the centre assessed GCSEs.

DD was omitted from the list for extra time, handwritten exams only, and without warning she was barred from the exam room. The school have subsequently apologised for the oversight but this just goes to show that you can get all the right paperwork, get everything approved in advance (it’s taken years!) and still have it all undone when it counts.

PS I am SO sorry to hear that. I have followed your story and can't begin to imagine how angry you are. How terribly upsetting for DD. Big hugs.
