I think Tipsy was referring to my comment about a grammar school opting to take an easier maths course, and not your son's school opting for a harder one.

Yes, it is IGCSE, I standing for international.

Maybe IGCSE science is more rigorous but, having done IGCSE maths with one of my students this year, I didn't think it was particularly more difficult, just different to the ordinary one, with some significant topics missing and no non-calculator paper to test if they can actually do arithmetic. But again the Cambridge IGCSE is more difficult to the Edexcel IGCSE so the level of difficult is also down to the board setting it.

I dont have any knowledge of IGCSEs - only that my DS' GS has decided to switch as part of review of KS3/4 provision of Science in the light of the 'new' GCSE science courses. The reasons they have given is that they wish to provide a greater challenge to the pupils & a better preparation for A level.
DS currently only Y7 so haven't looked into it too much yet. Thankfully his wont be the first cohort taking this route so we should be able to see what happens to the year above!
While his GS is great & has science specialism status it doesn't generally 'rush' into making changes so there must be strong grounds for them moving away from strightforward science GCSE at end Y11.
