AQA or EDEXCEL GCSE maths

Does anyone know the difference between AQA GCSE maths (Exam number 4306) or Edexcel GCSE maths?
Are students learning the same maths topics with either examining board?
Also, Additional maths - where is this now? who administers this exam? Is it OCR?
I come from a country where students almost always take Elementary maths and Additional maths at O level and the examining board is Cambridge.
I am confused as to why there are so many maths examing boards here, and schools choosing for example to do AQA English but Edexcel maths, with Additional mathematics being administered by OCR.
What are a student's options?
