Actually the dumbing down happened some thousands of years earlier that you indicate when the accents were added to the language so that the "barbarians" (anyone not Greek) could properly speak the language  I am slightly amazed that the anglosaxons have not imitated the practice for the English language as this is now the international language; they are probably much more willing to tolerate non-native speakers accents (like myself) than my compatriots were more than 2500 years ago.

I'd always assumed that almost no state schools offer Ancient Greek (and I'm not aware of any which have it in their curriculum)
Colchester Royal Grammar still offer Ancient Greek. It is a year 8 option - the alternative being German.

My DD started Greek today in Yr 9. Her year has 4 "refugees" from a school that closed. As they haven't studied French (jaw drops in disbelief) they are having to take Greek instead!

So we have now have the largest Greek set in living memory.

Greek 1 Meeja Studies 0!
