retaking a gcse

A friend told me today that if you retake a gcse and get a lower mark,the last exam taken is the one that counts. If you get a B in year 10 and retake in year 11 and get a c,we have to take the C grade, Surely that is wrong. Can someone put me straight. :?

If you do one retake, the best mark from both will be the one awarded, if you retake twice then I think it's the best of the last two, with the mark from the first discarded.

That you so much for posting information. I have posted this onto my friend and she is so pleased her son can retake without too much pressure.
