New 9-1 GCSE grades 'creating uncertainty for schools'
Is it not too late to discuss the new GCSE 9-1 format.....

For the amount of quotes for poems the students this year have to learn (by heart), counts for only 20% of exam question Eng Lit. 9-1 GCSE this year.
This is besides the quotes for Novel, Play and Shakespeare.
Feels like doing Bachelors degree in English!!

The changes are not as extreme as much of the press would have us believe.

I hope so....
I am not sure as up until last year students could have an open book exams so they did not have to memorise quotes as could pick up from the book. Tis year it is closed book so all to be memorised.

Media and the Unions.

I disagree. When exams were like this before (linear, closed book) there was little requirement to do anything other than know the content. The expectation now to apply, evaluate, prove is unlike what was in place pre 1990s. So now they need to both know it (as my generation did) and do something with it (as recent examinations have.) Therefore far from as it was before.Guest55 wrote:Exams have been like this before .... we survived.

Has some of the AS contents been downloaded into the new GCSE curriculum?

In maths there was always an overlap with GCSE material.
Exams were like this - I sat them myself.

Maths and Further Maths is seeming ' a walk in the park'.
My comments are more specific to English GCSE and closed book exam. Make it open book so child can look for exact quote and apply it to the content.

"Open book" is relatively recent - seriously, the amount of quotes expected will be lower. My friend is an English examiner ...
