I don't know how children at such a young age can be so sure they will never need to or want to speak a foreign language. I did French GCSE at school because I had to, I didn't consider myself a linguist, 30 years later I now speak fluent Spanish and I can understand French, thanks in part to my Spanish and in part to the GCSE I did many years ago. You never know what the future holds and I personally think a French GCSE is a very good idea. Learning a language opens up parts of the brain that other subjects don't, doing this when you are young makes any possible future study of languages much easier. French opens up all the latin based languages, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian etc.

I agree guest201. I really regret not learning a language when I was younger (I only did 1/2 year of French!) and it is so much harder to learn as an adult.
