GCSE French

Hello everyone,

It seems like yesterday DS1 did his 11 plus and now he will be doing his GCSE's next year.
Can anyone help in terms of French revision, it seems so much to do! To make matters worse, he hasn't been paying attention in year 10 so he has a lot of catch up to do.

Are there any resources out there?

His first plan of action is to:
1 Learn all the vocab in the AQA spec
2 Learn all the verb conjugations in his text book

Any tips will be gratefully devoured, it feels like he is starting from zero!

For German DD set up a quizlet with all the vocabulary from the aqa spec. (apparently this doesn’t take too long as you can copy and paste chunks straight from the spec.)

My DS gives a big thumbs up to Quizlet.
Once the vocabulary and grammar were on his account he did about 15 mins per day.
He tells me the improvement in marks was pretty rapid and enjoyed the challenge in the end.
I’d say his approach to work in year 10 was a relaxed one but predicted a good grade by the end.

Hello Mamabear,

Oh yes, I remember reading your posts a few years ago on the Birmingham thread!!! Waving!

Maybe check if his school uses Activelearn as listening to texts spoken with the proper pronunciation will enhance his learning and help him the day he will sit the listening paper.

Do also check with your DS if his French teacher has not posted anything on the Moodle site of his school in the French GCSE section. It is funny (and sad! ) how some students (some of them excellent! ) do not take the time to take this obvious step.

If you have yourself learn French when at school, maybe drill him on his vocab and, if possible, keep this going during the coming academic year. Learning vocab is - I think- the most boring part of learning a foreign language for a 15 years old.

To learn conjugations, he might find that listening to some of them on youtube may help him.

Hi JaneEyre!

Loving all these ideas, DS's pronunciation is dire but when I questioned him he said he is saying it as it is spelt to help him!
I did French GCSE and remember really swotting for it, there was no other way for me.
