11 Plus Exams Forum

Hi Everyone

DD is starting her GCSE journey (Y10). Found her struggling a bit in Physics and Maths. Happy to learn & teach her these myself as cannot afford a tutor. DD is very keen to learn. Could experienced parents or tutors on the forum advice on resources (free if possible or at a small cost) that I can access. Specifically I am looking for worksheets that I can give her to practice or revise to build her confidence

Does the school subscribe to MyMaths?

It might be worth registering free for TES - there are free resources on there. I'l add more thoughts later

https://www.mathsgenie.co.uk/gcse.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is a really useful website - it has videos explaining all the topics, arranged by level and then exam style questions and answers. It's free

https://www.my-gcsescience.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is great for sciences, but you have to pay for it. There are videos for each topic - and you can print off a skeleton copy of the powerpoints on the screen which you can then take notes onto. Again it has exam questions and answers for each topic. You can find some of the videos for free on Youtube, but you don't get the sheets to take notes onto.

But first, gulat, before you attempt anything, please ask her to speak to her Maths/Physics teacher - they are very likely to offer completely free sessions at break/lunch or after school for her, if they see that she is struggling but keen to improve. I have never known a teacher not want to help in that sort of situation.

We have always found the CGP revision guides and the workbooks (and answers) brilliant. You can get them second hand on ebay for next to nothing. If you do decide to get these, make sure you get the guides for the examining board(AQA, OCR Edexcel etc) that your child is sitting the exams in.

+ 1 on above resources Gulat and you can also try Mr Barton for Maths. And, as Gringo pointed out, CGP do tend to have excellent texts for these subjects.

Schools get CGP books more cheaply so it would be worth asking about that.

I'd echo what KCG says about talking to school. They will know which resources fit their specification best.

- @Gringo64 thankyou Have purchased CGP workbook to help her through problems. She is working through them
- @G55 will have a look at the other resources you have posted
- @G55 checked with the school and they do not have a subscription to mymaths and dont intend to either.
- @G55/@KCG spoke to the school, they cannot direct me to any additional resources other than those provided by yourselves. They suggested CGP only. Tried to tell me my DD does not require additional practice. They possibly think I am one of the pushy parent . However I know my child and she is one of those that needs loads of practice before she feels confident.
