Re: Physics and Maths A levels
It is good to hear that Miss Tinkers is enjoying maths so much. I have heard many students saying the same (that they really begin to love Maths post GCSE). Including my sister who is a pure maths Professor and who totally flunked maths (was in the bottom set Until she was 16) she then moved Country and Maths was a compulsory part of her post 16 curriculum. She loved it. So yes I agree Tinkers a huge amount can change post 16. And it keeps on changing if we keep our minds open to change.

Exactly the same here with chemistry. DS's 4th A level, which he always intended to drop after AS (& completely different to his other choices) became his favourite & he is now studying a similar subject to degree level & loving it.Guest55 wrote:Tinkers - my DS's favourite GCSE was Chemistry and he considered a degree. However, he did not enjoy some parts of the A level and dropped it after AS.

This is why I am so against the move back to linear ... schools need to do more to really show what A level study is like and forget about just packing them in to classes.
Re: Physics and Maths A levels
I agree, under the current system DS1 would have done 3 A levels & would never have found "his" subject.

Ditto for my DS ...
Re: Physics and Maths A levels
We were shocked when ds1 dropped history at the end of year 12, it was the one subject I would have put money on him continuing.
DS2 took chemistry as his 4th subject (it was a late addition )and is absolutely loving it

Re: Physics and Maths A levels
Friend's ds started 5 (including FM) because my friend asked him to do one non-science subject for a few weeks and see what he thought of it. He dropped Chemistry and FM instead and is now studying that subject at university, having previously expected to read Physics!
Re: Physics and Maths A levels
DS started Chemistry and Music (alongside the physics, maths and FM he wanted - he already had AS maths, so not as much as it looks!) intending to apply to Cambridge to read Natural Sciences - mainly physics but some chemistry alongside. He found he loved music, was made to join the choir, learnt how to sing properly and that he was a bass, and dropped Chemistry after AS rather than the music, having decided he didn't like chemistry enough to carry on to A2, let alone study it at uni. He is now reading Physics at uni, but is a choral scholar alongside that, which he loves and it pays a small amount of money too. He would never have found that love if he hadn't had a chance to try the music A level.
