University and lentgh of time taken for A levels

The UCAS application re modules is complicated but you don't HAVE to put every attempt at every module you have taken.
However, Universities can ask for the additional information regarding ALL modules (as Cambridge do).
As far as I am aware NONE of the competitive courses at top Unis take any account of UCAS tarrif/points. They specify A2 grades, usually in one or more particular subjects & often to be obtained in a specific year. Doing well in additional AS modules in either year 11 or 12 may make an application stand out but in my experience will not be an alternative to acheiving required grades in the A2 exams.
I think that increasing numbers are looking at A*/A grades at GCSE in deciding who to interview/make offers to - I guess the school reference could point out where lower GCSE results have been compensated for by good AS module results in year 11?
