I had no idea it was this complicated! If I understand correctly, this all means that someone getting 100% at AS but 88% at A2 would get an A whereas someone getting 81% at AS and 91% at A2 (i.e. higher marks in total) would get an A* which seems a bit strange, so I can see that it's quite important to grasp the idiosyncracies of the grade scheme. And the changing boundaries look interesting to have to second guess every year.

Many thanks for the information- I will tell SIL to do some detective work of her own about the specifics of DNs exam boards.

I'm not sure I understand why Maths is different though...?!

Maths is different because you can get an A level in different ways.

Everyone takes C1, C2 (AS pure modules) and C3, C4 (A2 modules)

then you take two application modules:

S1, D1 and M1 are all AS and you can take two of those

Some schools do S1 (AS module) and S2 (A2 module) or similar for M1 and M2 or D1 and D2.

To make sure only the A2 modules are used for an A* they have to just look at C3 and C4 as these are the only A2 modules the students MUST take.

You really want me to explain

Certain modules are 'fixed' and others can be used in either - the exam board distributes these to maximise your grades. However it does sometimes get this wrong and you can ask for a different allocation - basically you can't put e.g M2 in A level Maths if you want M1 in Further Maths.

We keep a spreadsheet to keep 'on the ball' with this

Yes - very important to understand this and the part about getting as many marks in the bag at AS.
