AS grades

Post by Naulakha »

Could anyone tell me if it is possible to get an A* at AS level or is this only possible at A2?

What AS grade (or UMS/ % ) is needed at AS to achieve A or higher at A2- I am trying to find this out for my SIL to help motivate her DS who is ambitious but rather laid back!!!

Many thanks

You cannot achieve an A* at As level. 80% UMS and above is an A. In order to gain an A, you need to have total ums marks of 80% when reults from both AS and A2s are added together. In order to gain an A*, you need an average over the two years of 80% BUT UMS marks in the subject have to be 90% or over in your A2 exams. (are you following !)

So the exact marks achieved at AS do not have the effect your post seems to suggest. You will be applying for university with AS marks though, so the higher they are, the better it looks . The most important point to motivate a teenager though is that the more UMS marks under your belt after AS, the fewer you have to gain in A2 in order to gain an A as the marks are aggregated over the two years. You still have to get 90% in A2 to get A* though.

Re-sits of AS to bump up marks are fine but too many would not be so good in the eyes of the more competitive universities. In addition, time spent revising old work when you should be going forward with A2 work is not helpful (unless a skills-based subject like languages).

Belinda - you added the Maths bit(correctly!) which nearly everyone gets wrong ..

Please be aware that AS grades now have to be cashed and declared on the UCAS form.
