North London or thereabouts Indy 6th for daydreamer

Post by silverysea »

dear oracle of all things educational!

I have a bright dd with broad interests starting year 11 in a state comprehensive, but who has a variable performance in exams and unclear what she wants to do as a career, except she loves Biology. Also fairly consistently does well in music, physics, French and geography. Hates chemistry, has suddenly gone off English from being the star of the KS3, and generally has found GCSE a boring and depressing slog so far. Heading for ok grades but not what she is capable of, by all accounts. We have really screwed up with the choice of school and teaching approach for her.

Definitely want to move her next year, that's decided. But where? We want to move house for family reasons, her school will affect the location.

My battle plan is to apply/sit for several competitive sixth forms.

However, if she doesn't make the GCSE grades needed, or make the cut where there are few places, has anyone recent experience of alternative schools?

If she lets herself down, we will want a school to build her confidence back up and give her the support needed to actually do better at A level or IB. She gets a* one minute, then a bad grade and snotty discouraging comment from the teachers the next. Poor communication with parents. We have had a bellyful of that.
