A level choices

Post by zvrk »

Hello, my son is slowly thinking about possible A level subjects. So far he has mentioned Maths and Physics -and Economics. He has done his GCSE maths early and is very natural at it. What difference is between A level Maths and A level Further Maths?
He likes Geography.
Do they have to choose 3 or 4 subjects? We will be going to 6th form evening in his school in November.

A level Further maths has different topics in it - you can only take it in addition to Maths.

The new specifications come into play next year; is he retaking the GCSE maths in 2017? If not then he needs to look at the topics he did not do before starting A level.

Policies will differ between establishments; for example, so far with DD we have looked at two sixth form colleges and one comprehensive. Both the colleges offer all of the subjects that DD wants and both still enter all A level candidates for the AS level exams in year 12. At the first, she would probably be allowed to start with the intention of taking all four subjects to the full A
level. At the second, she probably wouldn't be.

The comprehensive school doesn't offer two of 'her' subjects, but she identified acceptable alternatives. If she wanted to take all four, though, she would possibly have to bring with her a more 'valuable' clutch of GCSE grades than her current grammar school would want  . The comp doesn't do AS levels.

What is your DS doing this year in Maths, out of interest?
