Application for Sixth Form

Hi all

Dd is applying to another Grammar School for Sixth Form. This will be Plan B as she is more than happy to stay at her current school and the courses she would like to take there are available to her, whereas the other school does not teach one of the A Level subjects that she wishes to do.

So.......hopefully all being well, dd will stay at her current school for Sixth Form. No reason why she won't secure enough points to stay but it would be foolish not to have another choice/choices.

Part of the application form, it asks why you wish to study at chosen school, university course interests, etc. Daughter's A Level choices at her current GS are Dance, Psychology and English Lit. The other school does not teach Dance A Level (only as an extension subject) so her choices would be Psychology, English Lit and Philosophy & Ethics. Dd does not really have a clear idea of what course she would like to do at Uni. She excels at dance, but is also academic. At present, she just wants to take A Levels at subjects she enjoys and is good at!

Could anyone point me in the direction of any online resources for Sixth Form statements? She is unsure how to word why she wishes to study there given that it isn't her first choice! Thank you :)

Firstly, if she is happy to stay where she is and is unlikely to miss the grades, do you really need a backup? None of my 3 did.

Secondly, the school is not allowed to use the statement as part of the admissions process so it will only be for information and something to talk about if she goes for some kind of offer day. That being the case I strongly suggest she words it herself and just explains why she has chosen the subjects she has. It isn't worth stressing over tbh.

Thank you Amber, that's helpful. I just assumed that it was best to have a back up as never want to presume anything!

I agree that putting it in her own words would be best.

We were planning on a back up, but at the time DD was wanting to do german and very few schools offer it. Of the other two that were possibly viable transport wise, she didn’t really fancy either. Both had open evenings on the same day and she couldn’t decide which one, so didn’t bother.

She has since changed her mind about german (a shame I know Amber), but she doesn’t want to move. Her predicted grades are plenty good enough to be able to stay where she is.

Her choice.

My DS had a back up plan as you never know what can happen even if they are assured good grades. I would not put too much effort into this. Just say she is chosing subjects she enjoys. They usual interview the new entrants anyway when she can say more and it is really her predicted grades the things they will be looking at.
