Over offering from uni' results in bribes to take a gap year
Front pages of the Times today.
Some Uni's have over offered resulting in students being offered bribes to take a gap year as they have no room for all the students.

That is assuming they all make the grades in the summer, I presume? Which, of course, there is no guarantee....
Edited - so this happened last year - and I suspect in varying degrees, most years. If Nottingham really did offer 260 Medical students to delay, then that is almost their course again - which is interesting, as last year they were very keen to offer people their new Lincoln pathway as they did not have enough applicants.

This happened to the year above me for dentistry at Bristol back in the 80s. It resulted in there only being 35 in my year because there were 70 in the year above.
