Y11 DD is happy at the school and finds the teachers to be caring. She has never considered moving for Y12. We're very close and DD can walk there in less than 10 minutes, so it works very well for us. I get the impression that some families turn their whole life around for the school and are surprised when it's not perfect. It's a state school in a lovely but expensive location with high costs and money seems tight.

Sixth-form class sizes vary a lot. Which subjects does your DD want to study?

DD is unsure about her future career but her interests lie in the sciences and maths and she's selected these for Y12. From your DD's subjects, maths and bio are always very popular and econ increasingly so. The class sizes will probably be around 25, particularly for maths and bio.

Your DD may be better off avoiding a long and tiring journey and you may want to help her select a school where she would be fresher at the start of the day and more able to concentrate and develop a deeper understanding of the subjects.

You might get more responses and a flow of discussion by posting in the Hertfordshire (Other and North London) forum.

my dd will be starting year 7 at HBS this year, so no direct experience.
though dd of one of my relative joined HBS in sixth form from a nearby private school. She did very well there and went on to study science at Cambridge. She keeps the school in very high regard and rightly so.
It was easy to adapt to new environment and it was quite welcoming in fact. though with a highly selective intake, the pressure can't be as normal as other schools. imo that's quite to an extent self imposed ones.
parents intensity either doesn't creep in school campus or it fades away to quite an extent with their child in.
