The Times names universities who have suffered a marked decrease in student numbers as the University of East London, Southampton Solent, Cumbria, Kingston, Bedfordshire & Huddersfield.

The remaining safety net was whipped from under them early this year with the demise of HEFCE. It's a fair bet that the three are in areas that are already struggling economically; they're probably one of the few providers of decent quality employment in the area and provide places to students who can't readily move to another university. But hey, the market. Obviously higher education should be a market driven enterprise, that's why absolutely everyone else in the world does it that way.
Sorry, too much of a socialist to believe that.. would be interesting to know which ones though, to see if there are any socio-economic factors, similarly if perhaps they are in locations with more than one uni in the area

Solent was one that I had in mind.scary mum wrote:The Times names universities who have suffered a marked decrease in student numbers as the University of East London, Southampton Solent, Cumbria, Kingston, Bedfordshire & Huddersfield.

Solent would have been one of my picks; for the north west it could be any of a number, Cumbria would be an obvious candidate as would Edge Hill.
Meanwhile, just to bring some desperately needed stability to the sector (I really should highlight the sarcasm) this seems to have slipped past completely unnoticed:
