I know that govt pays child's uni fee and money required for thier living for all three or four years, i think uni fee is as per actual and around 3k for living per year.

if this is true, then parents do pay almost nothing when the child is in uni.

does it mean children are not burden to parents financially once they get uni offer, parents may still buy games/gifts for them but do not need to pay for uni fee/expenses.

is this correct ?

also if child wants to pursue post graduation, then how does this work. does govt pays similarly to post grad fee and expenses or to be paid from parents pocket ?

Harrow123, I think you need to read the papers and watch the news....

by the time your DCs get to university they will be getting a loan to pay approx 9k per year for the fees alone while they are at university + a loan for their maintenance (approx 5k / year max I think).

This will not be enough for them so I hope you have deep pockets to pay for the essentials, forget the games and gifts it will be bread and jeans.

the loan will be become payable when your DC is earning over 21k per year.

government does not pay fees for all students, they have to take out a loan to pay.

also my daughter's loan for living expenses didn't even cover her accommodation in Central London.

They are very much dependent on parental help.

grants are a thing of the past now.( I was lucky had full grant plus mature students allowance in 1986)

i read metro when travelling to london but when i am working from home or on break then i may miss the news.

i did not know 5k is not enough per year for maintenance. how much does a child need per year in uni for their maintenance for a normal life ? and not for a posh life

can someone please answer my query about post graduation studies and expenses

am trying to get a point where i can be free from children's education expenses so i can start clearing my mortgage

postgrad is similar - they have to pay the fees and often maintenance - some people get sponsored through employers / work, or for research degrees get employed by university (pay very low but fees for degree are covered).

maintenance loan will just about cover but that excludes books, clothes, travel, computers, shampoo...

living costs will vary according to where university is, especially the cost of renting somewhere.

My daughters flat cost more per week than my sister's 3 bedroom house with huge garden cost per month. One in Central London , the other in rural Worcestershire..

Transport costs too depend on whether it is a campus university or not, region of country etc.

post grad courses vary, sciences may be easier to attract a bursary(or were in my day) but it is still expensive. My daughter had considered doing a masters but the cost worried her.

hmm, ok so if parents are near london or in london, then children can continue staying with parents and save on rental money if they get offers in london uni

in fact at UCL priority is given to pupils who come from outside M25 when allocating university accommodation.

Quite a few of my friends children lived at home when studying at University of Kent at Canterbury ( roughly 20 miles away), but then transport becomes an issue.

I travelled in from Folkestone to Canterbury all through my degree . I had to use the bus for my first year and I was exhausted by end of week, leaving at 7.15 and sometimes not getting back until 8pm. The last thing I felt like doing was writing up Chemistry practicals - and I didn;t even try to fit in any socialising!
